The No-Touch Rule: Part One — Seven Days by Katarzyna Szczepkowska

Take twelve adults, remove their phones, alcohol, work, and physical contact — then add attraction, secrets, emotional baggage, and a therapist with rules of her own. What could possibly go wrong?

Quite a lot. And that is exactly why this works.

After discovering her fiancé’s betrayal, Mara Ellis arrives at an exclusive Greek retreat where participants must spend seven days without deliberately touching one another. Then she meets Theo. Unfortunately for Mara, attraction becomes much harder to ignore when touching is the one thing you cannot do.

The strongest part of the novel is the chemistry between Mara and Theo. Their relationship is built through eye contact, sharp dialogue, restraint, arguments and uncomfortable honesty rather than instant physical intimacy. Even something as simple as exchanging a towel becomes charged with tension.

Mara is also a genuinely entertaining protagonist: sarcastic, observant, defensive and smart enough to recognize manipulation — except when her own emotions are involved.

The book does occasionally overuse short, fragmented sentences, and some of the secondary retreat drama pulls attention away from the strongest storyline. At over 700 pages, it could also have been tighter.

Still, the central idea is clever, the dialogue moves quickly, and the slow-burn tension delivers.

Final verdict: A smart, unusually psychological slow-burn romance about desire, consent, technology and what happens when attraction can no longer take the shortcut of touch.
